I agree, would've been a kickass move if it had worked. Blind striking with a fleet of that size isn't advisable though. Probing updates the "Message" label after any refresh, while the attack can only be seen in the Overview page.
He had a 5 minutes window to be on my throat and probably gambled that I would not view the Overview page during that time.
It was a nice try.
