I am pretty sure that something like this has been suggested before, but here it is.

A person can allow someone to "sit" their account when they are offline. The sitter could do anything the real owner could do, with the exceptions of buy or transfer rubies, change account name/password, or delete account.

This can be done any time, or if that seems like some accounts would become too overpowered, it could be an alternative to v-mode. That would allow people to go away from ZE without falling too far behind, but also having risk. This would need some specifics to be worked out, but I think it could be a good option.
