Check out this image of the Galaxy Map:

You use the first set of arrows <- -> to move the Galaxy Number higher or lower and the second set to move the System Number higher or lower.

There are 9 Galaxies and 499 Systems in each Galaxy. That's a crap load of open planet slots out there.

The Galaxy map depicted has no planets in it. There's tons of those in ZE right now.

The flip-side to this point of view is that having all your planets in one area limits your hunting range.

Which of course requires you to be a hunting type of person. :) If you're not, then by all means, cluster them puppies up. Of course, if they're all clustered up, someone else doesn't need to work as hard to find them ...
