Just started yesterday. Just wondering if I just need to keep my energy at a positive level at all times. I think I read somewhere that if you don't have enough energy, your mines produce 20% less. Just not exactly sure how energy works. Thanks in advance.

Yes, you must keep your energy out of the red. Any loss ratio is determined by how in the red you are. If your energy is at 90/100 that means that mine production will be diminished by 10% of it's potential output.
