you cant colonize an existing planet. this is not astro empire. things are done a bit differently here.
Process of colonizing
1) get colony ship (all its dependecies)
2) find a suitable system that you want to colonize on.
3) find an empty slot that do not have any existing colony on it.
4) send your colony ship on colonize mission to those empty slots.
voila.
fyi planets has a cap for building. try to get a big planet. usually any planet that has +450 building slot is considered big enough. for big planet try slots 4/5/6/14. they get u comparatively larger planets.
lower slot planets are good for energy production by satellites. some say they are also good for metal production i am not so sure about that anymore now.
lastly good luck with the game and welcome to the game and community.

You should join an Alliance asap, they will make your transition from AE to Zorg easier, if Standard server isn't what you like, come to Extreme, and join MOC-Masters of Chaos, We will have you up and running in record time. I played AE many times over several years. Welcome to Zorg Empire.

Family, what do you want to know? The post you have referenced is very old. The last post before yours was in 2013.
