What do Shields do?

Question, can someone please explain to me what shields do exactly? Do they act like hit points? Are they Damage reducers? What? Thank you for helping.

Think of shields as a sponge for soaking up attack strength. They act as a buffer, allowing your other defense to survive longer to do their job.

Er perhaps my question was a bit unclear...let me rephrase it: Will 400 shields points reduce incoming attack points by 400 for every attack or do they act as a 1 time buffer to prevent damage? (In other words, 400 "fake" hit points.) Thank you for helping.

on every attack 400 points will be blocked.

And if your shield is the only defence on the last round, it explodes. That explosion can take down 2LC 5LF 5BS and one Destroyer.
