Is there any way for me to do this voluntarily? The leader of my alliance has stopped playing so i can't ask him, and from checking the points in the alliance only me and one other person are really active

Click on the Alliance button in the Empire Menu. At the very bottom of the screen there should be a button that says "Exit from this alliance?". Click this and follow the instructions.
