If you are just starting out you shouldnt worry too much about your planets size. Just farm resources for a while from your other planets and when you think you need to move on, thats when you think about planets size. :)

I dont know whats so funny.....a strategy game's most distinctive charcteristic is knowing all and using it in a strtegic play&moves.
this game makes you gamble and all players have diffrent assets thus some have natural disadvantages while others have it the other way around.

i dont wanna gamble...i want to play a strategy game.

:D I dunno.
Expeditions are risky (including colonizing), you don't know what you can get or loose. That's part of the game. I think that's one of the things you should keep in mind when laying out your strategies.
You can't stop Lady Luck from doing her tricks. :D
