I have not found what level of storage capacity I have without storage facilities. I see the amount that building a storage building adds but do not know what my base line storage capacity is. Please let me know so I am not paranoid that I will loose resources by not having the space to store them.
Also...
Approximately what level of storage is enough ? Do I figure 12 hrs of production, or do I need to figure the capacity of all my ships plus a buffer.

In the planet menu, click on Resources.

Its first option at the right. You can find all these details there.

Is 1.000k 1.000x1.000 or just 1.000?

1.000 is just 1000

So 1.000k is 1,000,000
