You don't get more winnings, but they do bring back the winnings.

You can only get ~50% of the resources from a single raid.

Yes. You should include cargo ships when raiding resources. Attack ships have cargo but they are very limited.
You can only raid 50% of the defenders' resources. That is 50% metal , 50% crystal and 50% deut. Not the 50% of the combined resources.
1/3 of your cargo space will be used for metal, another 1/3 for crystal, and the last 1/3 for deuterium. They will not overlap.
A good way of computing how many cargo ship you should use is:
C = X / 2 * 3 / (Y or Z)
C= cargo ships needed.
X = highest number of resource (if the highest is crystal, use the crystal ; if the highest is metal, use metal ; etc)
Y = 5,000 (If you use small cargo ships)
Z = 25,000 (if you use large cargo ships)
You can further simplify the formula.
Don't forget to compensate for the cargo ships that might be destroyed during the attack.

Not really, considering it gives a longer space of time for the layer to come online. And the fact that if you didn't win the initial battle and destroy everything, you'd have to recall your cargos, wasting Deuterium. And then if the person has defense on their planet, 70% of them come back so your cargos would just get pulverized.
Send Cargos WITH the attacking fleet. Simpler, easier, takes up less fleet slots, and less margin for error.

Also, if the planet has less resources (Typically deut) then your cargos can carry, it carries more metal and crystal instead.

No it will not. You will only be able to fill the cargo 1/3 of metal, no overlapping. So if the target planet has only metal and no crystal and deut, only 1/3 of your cargo will be used. Same goes for crystal and deut.

I just noticed this when I was foraging for fuel. So I want to amend my statement.

The 1/3 cap does not apply to deuterium. But it is the last priority in loading.
So if you use 1 small cargo, you will be getting 1.666 metal, 1.666 crystal, 1.668 deuterium at full load.
If the target does not have enough metal or crystal to fill the cargo, they will fill up the rest of the space with deuterium. (50% rule still applies)

dont forget to compute in what your attacking fleet will hold as well. For example if you send 100 Battleships, they will hold 150,000 resources, so you can reduce the amount of LC you will need by 6, (150,000/25,000).
