Researching Technologies

So... I've been wondering... I've seen a few people say it so I have to ask,
At which point should we stop researching technologies ?
Can someone list which technologies it becomes pointless to invest in, and at which level we should stop researching them ?

I would suggest you open the Technologies display under your Empire Menu tab in the game. It tells you what you need to do for each technology and the level you need to get it to. If you have already surpassed this and everything is green to you *good job*. At this point I would say spend it in what you like to make yourself better as you never know what the future holds in this game. Spending resources in your WAS (weapons, armour, shielding) is never a bad thing. Nor is spending it in Impulse (increases your missle range), Hyperspace engine for faster big ships etc. Read each area of the technologies list to see what you want to invest in.

I would say that the only time you should stop researching technologies is when you can no longer see a significant benefit in relation to the cost. For example, i doubt very much that any player would advance WSA technologies past 20, even to get to 20 would be a huge cost.
Also there are some technologies (e.g. Laser, Ion, Plasma) that become useless after you have obtained the necassary level that other builds require.

There are some technologies which have no apparent advantage once you have reached a level that will allow certain builds. Others have obvious advantages.
Certain Techs increase a stat. Weapons, Armor, Shield continue to help combat stats with each level achieved. Hyperspace Engine/Drive, Impulse Engine, Combustion Engine make the ships using that technology faster. Computer Tech continues to increase the number of slots. Laser, Ion and Plasma Technology increase the effectiveness of those Defensive weapons. And so on.
Others do not appear to have any advantage. What is the benefit of Gravitron Technology Level 2? Does it have one? There is nowhere that says it does and I don't know of any that have tested it.
Whether it is just not explicitly stated or it does not exist is unknown.
Sorry if I confused you, but there is some undiscovered country here. I do not have a definitive answer for it. It is important to read the description of each item in the shipyard, Buildings and Technology tabs.

This is more along the lines of what I'm wondering.
Can we get some clarification as to the max level of technologies that actually affect gameplay ?
Instead of Plasma, Ion, and Laser techs becoming useless, why not have each additional level increase the damage output of your corresponding defenses ?
If they actually do become useless, there should be a cap so that we don't waste valuable resources.

I like the fact that there are no caps on even those technologies that have no additional purpose, except to Resource save during attacks:) I know that sounds kind of like whatever, but there are times when you cant afford the next resource and are over the caps of others, and are getting attacked, and it helps ward off those that might want to take your much needed resources at the time.
I'm interested if increasing your expedition tech gives you a survivability/discovery advantage or not tho, so i know how to invest in that or how to NOT invest in it.

There is a benefit.
