Ok thx slash for the help i get it now. With colonys are you saying that instead of researching and building my defenses i should try and get a colony ship and start another planet?

As a new player, absolutely! Watch your points climb every time you add a colony.

Also, you'll have resources to pool on a few primary big field planets, making research and ship building a lot less challenging.

When i make a new colony what will its defenses be like? Will it have the same stuff as my first, or will i have to build up shipyards and research and fodder again?

New colonies require all of the same builds as your home world. The only exception is that you do not need to purchase the same Research Techs, just the Research Labs to contribute to upgrading them.
