What strategy game doesn't have some chance in it? Most have a pair of dice, don't they?
There is tons of skill required to be a successful player here. You just need to learn when and where to take those chances. Isn't that the fun part of any game? Learning to master it?
Maybe I'm too old, but it seems everyone wants winning to be handed to them on a silver platter with little or no effort. It's the mentality that has "gamers" going out and spending loads of money on video, console, and PC games only to spend hours gleaning "cheats" to "win" at them faster. That's not gaming to me and it's certainly not "winning" if I had to use a cheat to succeed at it. There is no challenge. There is no sense that I've earned my victories and learned through my defeats.
It has no character. No soul. No honor. No integrity. No sportsmanship.

#12Hmm...If you ask me, luck should be brought to the minimum. It's your ability that counts, not your luck. How would you like it if you win by luck? Is that something to be proud of?
luck is the thing that spoils most games. It is an injustice to all who wield skill and spend effort; an unfair aspect that grants things to people who don't really deserve them.
A good game should not include so much luck that it includes "gambling" as a major part of it.
Do you think it is fair for someone to get a moon just because of a 1% chance? He/She didn't earn it, they got it by LUCK. If luck interferes to much with the equality of the game, I believe there is a need to make adjustments.

#13If you get a moon through a 1% chance I think that's alright. What do you want? That you get a moon when you reach a certain amount of DF?
Hey I've been hit too many times that I can count. Most with 20% moon chance. Yet until now my HW doesn't have a moon. That's fine by me.
The moon won't be that great if you get it so easily.
Right now I think the things that rely on luck is expedition and colonization. I think those aren't too great to change the tide.
Just think of the chances as an optional requirements. You can try it or not.
Everyone have the same chances in getting anything. I think that makes it fair enough.

Re: Survey Uninhabited planets
#14Hey that's a great idea now that you mentioned it...accumulating % chances of getting a moon until you reach 100%; before you get a moon. Or accumulating certain amount of Debris Fields to get a moon. More fair then waiting for a moon for months without getting one even though you have 20% chance most of the time while other people get it the moment they have the slightest chance of having one. Chances don't determine whether something is fair or not, the results do.neoshagrath wrote:If you get a moon through a 1% chance I think that's alright. What do you want? Re: Survey Uninhabited planets
#15If everyone had moons it wouldn't make them worthwhile as a game feature.
I like the small probability of getting a moon chance. It creates a challenge that would otherwise be missing and often promotes intra-alliance comraderies that promote the community.
I'm worried that many of these suggestions (if implemented) would result in a very stale and homogenized game. I've seen other games of this type become stagnant bores in very short order when things like this are incorporated. In one, I have 1000 Death Stars, 350K Destroyers, 1M Cruisers, and 15M Light Fighters. It's the most boring game I play.

#16that is a lot of deathstars really removes the awesomeness of having one

Re: Survey Uninhabited planets
#17Making it equal for everyone to get certain things doesn't necessary make it easier, it just makes things fairer. You won't be seeing millions of moons just because you eliminate the luck factor. I'm just trying to say that it is better and fairer for a person to EARN a moon rather than let Luck do the job. Of course it will mean you need to put in a lot of effort to earn a moon, I'm not suggesting it should come free.Effort and skill should play a greater part then luck, shouldn't that be the case for games like these?
I don't see why people want to support "gambling" in the game. Satisfaction should not be derived from "achievements" as a result of luck.

Re: Survey Uninhabited planets
#18luck is normal in life as is everywhere. Chance is present in everything we do so i dont see why it would not be in games like this. Chance is present in Starcraft also you just have to play with the hand you are dealt.

Re: Survey Uninhabited planets
#19Ah...Starcraft...you do realize that that Luck Levels in that game has been reduced to the absolute minimum right? Why did they do that? If luck is as normal and fair as you say it is, why isn't it such a eminent aspect in Starcraft? Simple. It's a strategy game, and as with all strategy games, luck has to be brought down to low levels so that Skill and perhaps indirectly; effort, becomes the deciding factor of the game. Do you know how much difference a Lunar Base can make in this game? It is too big a matter to be determined by a person's luck. If it's a small matter, I won't mind if luck takes control, but this...this is something of possibly enormous proportions...

Re: Survey Uninhabited planets
#20starcraft is a very short term strategy game. if it was not completely balanced and without surprises it would make the game unplayable. but you know that scarab shots and fleet movement and path finding can be totally random.
