How long does protection last, and how can I determine if another player is under protection?

I want to start raiding others but it seems everyone is under protection or they are not near my point score. (Which is another cumbersome exercise to determine a rivals score)

My starting planet has 163 slots. Is that the same for everyone? Is there any advantage in a start position? Is there any variables within the planet that makes one different than the other (other than # of slots)? Perhaps a bonus to metal production etc.? I understand the randomness of the # of slo...
